You cannot rely on physical evidence or lack of pain to rule out a bite. Medical experts universally recommend that finding a bat in a room with someone who was asleep—or someone who cannot clearly communicate, such as a young child or a person with a disability—requires immediate medical evaluation. Follow these concrete steps immediately: Seek Medical Attention Immediately: Go to the nearest emergency room or designated local health clinic. Because rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, the safest course of action is getting the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PEP includes an immune globulin injection and a multi-dose series of the rabies vaccine. Capture the Bat (If Safe): If the bat is still present, contain it safely without touching it with bare hands. You can trap it using a box or a large towel. Have the bat tested for rabies by animal control or your local health department. If the test results are negative for rabies, you can stop the vaccination series. If the bat cannot be found or tested, the full vaccine series is typically recommended as a precaution

It is not recommended to assume that an unseen bat bit you while you were asleep simply because bat bites can sometimes be small. However, if you wake up and find a bat in your room, or there is a reasonable possibility of direct contact (especially in a sleeping person, young child, or someone unable to reliably report an exposure), you should seek medical care immediately to determine whether rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed. PEP decisions are based on the likelihood of actual exposure, not on hypothetical possibilities. There is no blood test or examination that can confirm an unnoticed bat bite after the fact. If no bat was present and there was no known contact, rabies vaccination is not routinely recommended.
