Through xray wanted to know whether casting immobilization would heal the injury or surgery is needed

Considering the age it is better to go for surgery. If union gets delayed, then there may be the need for prolonged immobilization, that may aggravate knee stiffness

If you are able to raise leg without knee bending, than without surgery it will be fine..
