Started with excruciating pain in the ears and head and a blocked nose. Took steam. Pain reduced in a few hours. Numbness still persists after one full day.

That's good that u took steam inhalation..i would suggest for examination of both dynamic membranes to rule out any other causes so as to keep the condition of ear intact for hearing and devoid of infection/ inflammation..
