Ear pus / Infection. No pain
Hi Dr, I am suffering from ear infection. No pain only pus discharge. I have taken treatment for almost 2 months. No complete cure. What should I do . Please guide. Is surgery is the only option?

Hello I'm Dr Nikita Iyer. It seems like you have a eardrum perforation because of which inflammations and infections causes pus discharge to come from the ear. This can be proceeded by an episode of cold or entry of water into the ear.
Next Steps
First, visit an ENT as the infection needs to be settled with a course of antibiotics, decongestants and ear drops. Once the ear drum is dry, an ear evaluation should be done to note the size as well as get an audiometry done.
If it's a small perforation which is dry since a month, then a minor procedure of TCA cauterization can be done. If it's a large perforation which gets repeatedly infected, then a tympanoplasty can be planned with necessary investigations done prior.

Hi.. It seems like you might be having a perforated ear drum, although that can't be confirmed prior to an ear examination by a specialist. In these cases, it will be profuse ear discharge (on and off) for long periods, without pain. You might be having decreased hearing from that ear also. Consult a ENT surgeon immediately to get a proper diagnosis first.

for a perforated ear drum, surgery is the definite treatment. however, if you don't want to get operated, keep the ear dry, and avoid contacting common cold or upper respiratory tract infection. the ear will become dry but you will be having hearing problems till you get operated.

avoid getting water inside the ear at all times. use cotton to plug the ear while bathing or washing. but don't plug the ear all the times, as it will exacerbate the discharge or may cause fungal infections.
