Need to stop self harming

2016-11-12 10:07:42
I am female, 24. I am a teacher in a private school. I love my profession but not my job. there are other problems too but the one I seek help for is that i have been self harming for a few months, on and off. I stopped for three months but I recently started again. I know I shouldn't and I understand the consequences, which is why I need to stop. I understand how wrong this is, but it's the only way because of which I feel that I'm in control of my life. I have tried engaging in constructive activities. I took swimming classes for a month, I tried skating, craft work, writing and so on. but when everything gets too much and I feel I would burst with everything that I feel, there's no greater help than the blade. and I instantly feel relieved. and interested in living. I don't want to be an addict of cutting which I'm afraid I'm slowly moving towards. I need help.

Dear friend, Self harming should be avoided of course. Need more details about when you are harming yourself, what happens before and after such episodes. You have also said that for the past few months you have started self harming. What or who has triggered you to this? Like this so many questions are to be answered. And one thing is that it is curable. It is just a habit as you had acquired it you can take out at anytime. Feel free to contact for further help.

Hello, I can understand the level of difficulties you must be facing which have led to current scenario including self harm. My polite but strong suggestion for you is to seek a consultation with a psychiatrist near you at the earliest. A comprehensive assessment will be required before understanding your mental health. Self harm may be sign of pain and despair which have built up inside you for all this time. However a psychiatrist will find and help you understand psychological and medical reasons behind such behavior. Depression, stress, anxiety, maladaptive personality etc are usual reasons behind deliberate self harm, however the reason in you will need to be understood after thorough evaluation. Your condition can be helped by a psychiatrist who will try to understand you as a person, your mental state, and may help you with a combination of medication and psychological intervention. These steps will help you regain control of your life and make your outlook towards life positive again. Hope this helps you. Best wishes for your health and future.

Hi, from what you have written you definitely need to consult a Psychiatrist. Self harm could be a symptom of a personality disorder or ongoing Depression . A detailed evaluation will be necessary. Once a diagnosis is made you may be given some medication. However you will need therapy to understand why you have self harming behaviour. Most likely something in your childhood has affected you. There may be abuse or neglect. However, now you have to learn to deal with stress in the workplace and personal life. You will also need to learn to value yourself and your strengths. You are in a wonderful profession which in itself is very fulfilling. Impacting young minds and being a guiding light for them could be your mission. Focus on this and visualise all the good you can do and how much satisfaction you can derive from your profession. Do not let the work environment deter you from this goal. Self harm temporarily gives you feeling of relief or numbness from the pain of what you feel. But it is not a solution. You will have to find ways other than self harm to help relieve the emotional turmoil you experience. This may require long term therapy with either a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist. You can definitely get better! Hope this helps, All the Best!
