Dear patient It seems your father is suffering from osteoarthritis It is a degenerative condition which leads to pain in knees affected
Next Steps
surgery is the last option if the medical treatment doesn't led to symptomatic relief of pain .. do take cartilage protective  like (type 2 collagen,alfapin etc ) THE GRADE OF OSTEOARTHRITIS (SEEN ON X RAY AND MRI) AND SYMPTOMS  DECIDE WHETHER SURGERY IS MUST OR NOT
