Frequent mouth ulcers in children are called recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and in a 9-year-old the most common underlying cause is a nutritional deficiency â particularly
Vitamin B12, iron, folic acid, or zinc. These deficiencies are very common in Indian children and can easily trigger repeated painful ulcers in the mouth. Other contributing factors include: minor trauma from hard or sharp foods, toothpastes containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) which irritate the mouth lining, stress or immunity-related issues, and occasionally gluten sensitivity. If the ulcers are very frequent (more than 3-4 times per month), an underlying immune or gastrointestinal issue should be ruled out.
Next Steps
Get a blood test: CBC,
B12, iron studies, folic acid, and zinc levels. Start a multivitamin with zinc and B-complex (like Supradyn Kid or Junior Horlicks with extra B12) daily for 2-3 months. Switch to an SLS-free toothpaste. For pain relief during ulcers, apply a small amount of Bongela gel or Kenacort oral paste on the ulcer 2-3 times a day. Avoid giving the child acidic fruits, spicy food, and hard chips during active ulcers. If the ulcers persist despite supplementation, see a Pediatrician.
