Chondromalacia usually responds well to physiotherapy. It needs some supplementary analgesics and Vitamin D3. Muscles of thigh (quadriceps) are responsible for gliding of the knee cap (patella) over the thigh bone ( femur). Weakened muscles give rise to abnormal gliding and pain. So be assured Physio will definitely help, though it will take some time.
