Is it Rabies Exposure ?

2025-07-05 17:21:18
A street dog had placed a ball in its mouth. One month (30 Days) later, I touched and played with the same ball. Without washing my hands afterward, I consumed food (oral ingestion). My questions are as follows: a) Is rabies vaccination required in this case? b) For how long and maximum can the rabies virus survive on surfaces? c) Can rabies be transmitted through oral ingestion, such as eating contaminated food? d) What is the appropriate response if a dog licks intact (unbroken) skin? e) Should indirect exposure scenarios like this be considered a rabies risk? f) Is it possible to contract rabies from environmental sources—for example, by touching a contaminated object and then eating without washing hands?

Rabies virus sticks on dry surface for few hours to days, but on wet surface can stay for weeks. It stays longer on flat surfaces, as compared to porous surface. Risk of rabies is from a bite or scratch. If a dog licks on intact skin, wash area very well, then apply some antiseptic cream. Always wash hands before eating.
