Laser is used only to soften the lens,so that it can be easily extracted through a smaller opening. Its more useful in hard cataract. The basic surgery is performed by phaco only. Which is quite a safe procedure. The risks are equivalent to possibility of road accidents. Precautions will be same for phaco with laser or without laser.

1) Is Laser eye surgery always successful? - No surgery, for that matter no treatment can be said to be 'always successful' with certainty.
