OCD medication are usually started at lower doses and gradually increased to effective doses. Once at the effective dose, response starts within three months of regular use.
Once satisfactory response is obtained, medication must be continued at least for another year at effective dose before making an attempt to slowly reduce the dose of medicines. During this period one has to watch for recurrence of symptoms closely.
Please note that regular follow ups are required to assess for improvements as well as side effects. Multiple medications sometimes need to be tried and the above figures are only for the medicine that will eventually work for an individual. It may take a few trials to get it right.
With the right support and therapeutic environment, OCD is a manageable condition.
