Fibrous dysplasia is a bone disorder where scar-like (fibrous) tissue develops in place of normal bone, leading to weak bones, fractures, and deformities. It is caused by a mutation in the GNAS gene. This gene mutation occurs after conception (it is not inherited from parents), and it leads to the production of abnormal bone-forming cells that replace normal bone and marrow with fibrous tissue. The exact trigger for this mutation is not well understood, but it is known to occur randomly and sporadically.
