How does one overcome depression and anxiety?
Our society is in the throes of a virtual epidemic of depression and anxiety. The numbers are quite staggering. We need to look deeper into this phenomenon to understand it and overcome it.
Many of us live lives, somewhat robotic in nature and devoid of deeper meaning and purpose. Our lives often become visionless and passionless. We live in an intensely competitive culture that rewards achievement and success. Our identity and esteem become reflections of these external markers of achievement.
Our pursuit of happiness and well-being has become terribly misdirected.
The cultural paradigm in which we live leaves us disconnected, disenchanted, and isolated. When this occurs, we tend to honor and seek material acquisitions at the cost of devoting ourselves to intimate and loving relationships: others and ourselves.
We don't have time to nurture our loved ones or ourselves, and we lose our vision of a well-spent life. In fact, the problem is that we don't know how to live well.
In some instances, depression is situational. Loss of a loved one, illness, and job loss create circumstances that are painful. Working through the loss is more healing than medicating the pain. It is essential to address the underlying causes and not simply suppress the symptoms.
The difficulty is that in our quick-fix mentality, we believe that if we can suppress the symptoms, then all is well.
We need to find the true meaning and purpose of life.
In order to truly live well, we have to find Truth within us.
1. Expression kills depression.
Talk to your loved ones, share as much as you can, and if you don't have anyone talk to yourself, and if you can't even do that, talk to any God in whom you have faith.
2. Be busy be happy.
Depression needs time to survive, if you make yourself busy enough not even to spare any second, depression would cease to exist.
Use internet and entertainment to pass any extra time. (Avoid social media though)
3. 5 am to 7 am cure.
Reserve hundred minutes each morning and spend them systematically, 20 minutes for meditation, 30 minutes broad walking, 20 minutes exercise, 30 minutes breathing exercises (pranayama), nothing can beat this if you adopt to it.
4. Medicines do magic on depression.
Excellent medicines with minimal side effects are available for depression and anxiety.
All you need is to be bold enough to visit a neurologist, or a psychiatrist, if you can't get support from family, book an appointment and go alone.
5. Clear the environment around you.
Stay in cleanliness, eliminate negative people from your life, wear neatly ironed clothes and accessories, don't watch any negative shows, news, and movies.
