Assuming that you have not had any previous knee issues or suffered any knee injury in the past or any injury recently, this knee pain could be due to unaccustomed activity. The X-ray uploaded doesn’t show any features of arthritis such as joint narrowing, osteophytes etc. but this can be influenced by the position in which the X-ray was taken. A standing X-ray is preferable for the same reason. Presently you can ice the knee at frequent intervals, limit stair activity and floor level activity such as squatting and cross legged sitting. With some activity modification, and use of icing, pain should subside. You can also take SOS oral analgesic for few days if the pain is severe. Once the knees are back to normal, consider physiotherapy to begin strengthening the lower limb and core muscles so as to prevent recurrences.
Next Steps
You need to check if there is any instability or giveaway sensation while walking (especially on an uneven surface). Also rule out any locking or catching of the knee. See if there is any perceptible clicking sound associated with pain which was not there before. All of the above might indicate internal knee derangement that may need further investigating.
Health Tips
Once the pain subsides, consider regular activity to avoid deconditioning of the muscles. Activities that are comparatively better for people with knee pain include cycling (even indoor is alright) and swimming since both of these don’t directly load the knee. Regular exercises not only improve bone and muscle strength but keep the joints healthy. In case the pain doesn’t subside after 3-5 days then it’s better to consult a doctor to see if any additional investigations might be required.
