Discharge from from vulva

I have female pug 4 yrs old. I got her spayed last year. Few months discharge was coming from her vulva. I got her scanned. There was no stump left. But struvite crystals were there. Doctor prescribed dog food for struvite crystals and antibiotic therapy was given as urine infection was there. Few days back we say discharge again and uti was again present and antibiotic therapy was started again. Today I again saw discharge. Is is UTI or something else?

Hi. Thanks for your question . It is possible to have crystals and a bacterial infection in the urinary tract at the same time. The anti microbial therapy will take care of the infection in most cases. Your veterinarian may advise a urine routine examination and/or a culture sensitivity test incase of recurrent infections to find out the cause. If the urine is found to have struvite you may be asked to continue the struvite diet for 2-3months . Even cranberry extract may be advised. As your pet is neutered it is possibly a urinary tract disorder. The doctor may even send the discharge for a cytology test . Hope this helps! Wishing a speedy recovery for your pet :)

Struvite in the tract as well as rememant ovarian tissue even after spaying may be the cause of the recurring UTI. Females are particularly susceptible to UTIs.
Next Steps
urinalysis and urine culture would show a clear picture. Proper diagnostis to identify the root cause and thereby treat it with proper antibiotics and pain management for your pet.
Health Tips
If episodes of UTI occur more often and (predisposing) causes of UTI cannot be identified or corrected, long term low-dose therapy may be necessary. Consult with a vet for  diagnosis and further treatment.
