Depression as per icd - 10 is diagnosed when symptoms persist for at least 2 weeks. Sometimes the symptoms last a few days when it is called brief depressive episode. It is graded as mild, moderate and severe. Moderate to severe depressive episode is treated with pharmacotherapy ( medications) and if required psychotherapy ( counseling) when symptoms improve. Mild depression can be treated with psychotherapy alone.
