Yes the outermost layer of the tooth wears off with time. This can be due to friction from hard brushing, abrasions due to coarse toothpaste or eating highly acidic or sour foods like pickles , lemons etc.. Enamel can also wear off if the patient has severe acidity which causes acid regurgitation.
Next Steps
Evaluate the cause of enamel abrasion/erosion
Health Tips
Always use soft or medium bristled toothbrush and brush in a small circular motion instead of horizontal or vertical brushing.

Ur toothbrushing technique and duration is important in this . Brushing harder does not clean better... it causes loss of enamel with time.

A force of up to 50 kilograms is generated when we chew our food. Any two structures meeting continuously will get abraded with time and it will happen faster if such heavy forces are being born by them. That is why the teeth of child will be sharper then of a 50 year old man without any cavities. There is practically nothing that a person can do for this change. But what you can do is avoiding very hard foods, acidic beverages and tobacco or arecanut like substances. Physical damage caused by abrasion due to a hard brush or a force full brushing technique can also abrade the teeth. So a gentle brushing technique with a soft bristled toothbrush is advised. Regards
