Tooth cleaning or oral prophylaxis is a basic treatment for keeping your teeth healthy & to avoid any gum related issues. Before treatment u should be sure about your dental problems so that you can elaborate it precisely to your dentist like if you have any area in which you have frequent episodes of food lodgement or bleeding from gums or any sensitivity in teeth.
Next Steps

Ask your dentist which is the dirtiest part of your mouth and why is it so. I'd you require any accessory to keep your oral cavity cleaner. Do get your teeth polished after cleaning to remove the tiny scraches after scaling.
