Dealing with cardiophobia

2023-02-05 21:53:06
I worry about heart attacks a lot... Done ECG multiple times... 2D echo multiple times (3 times in 2 years), TMT multiple times (2 times in 2 years). All were normal... Done Calcium Cardiac Scan before 3 months... The score is zero... The cardiologist says I don't have anything to fear for the next 10 years... Still I keep worrying about heart attack... I have stopped exercises and keep thinking about attack all the time... I check my heart rate 10-15 times a day... If it's more than 75... I start worrying... Please help... This thing has ruined the quality of my life. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Hi You are afraid that you might have a heart attack even when the test results show that everything is normal. It is important to know how long it has been since you worry about having heart attack. It is important to know what is causing worry about heart attack. The pandemic has created a lot of fear and many people have anxious thoughts about their health. Also, work pressure and physical and mental exhaustion could be a reason for people to have irrational worries about their health. To overcome cardiophobia I suggest you consult a psychologist for counselling sessions. In order to determine the cause of your fear, a psychologist would like to know about your childhood, relationship with family, lifestyle, relationship with colleagues at work, and sleep pattern. Be easy on yourself and over a period of time you will feel better.
Next Steps
Consult a psychologist
Health Tips
Contact me for counselling session. Along with counselling I can suggest natural foods to calm the mind.

Usually, a worry about heart attacks brings adaptive response of engaging in health promoting behaviors like exercising regularly, keeping healthy diet etc. However, in your case, this worry about heart attack has initiated a series of behaviors that are opposite of health promoting behaviors. Basically, your relationship with your bodily  sensations, specifically sensations related to heart like palpitations, aches and pains, breathlessness, etc, has distorted. May be there was some event which specifically initiated this severe anxiety, which mimicked a heart attack (as per your knowledge of heart attacks). Hence, the cognitive behavior therapy sessions help you get back to feel comfortable with those sensations.
Next Steps
book an appointment with a clinical psychologist
Health Tips

Hi.. Please consult a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist. Your symptoms appear similar to hypochondria/ illness anxiety disorder but a formal diagnosis will be required to ensure proper treatment. A combination of medication and cognitive behaviour therapy will work best in your case. Please try to avoid finding any other non-clinical reasons of your condition and follow the treatment under medical supervision and clinical guidance.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychiatrist for Diagnosis and Medication. Consult a Psychologist for Counselling. CBT along with Lifestyle Changes and Interpersonal Guidance and Counselling is required.

Intrusive, obsessive fears and anxieties about health is not an uncommon mental health condition. We live in hundreds of unfavorable possibilities (like the possibility of an earthquake killing us) and yet we do not worry about them perpetually. Something going wrong with your otherwise healthy heart too is a similarly remote possibility. Yet you are unable to accept it as such. With this, I would suggest you to connect with a psychologist who will help you handle this anxiety and gradually eliminate it in a rational way.
