A dark longitudinal line (stripe) running lengthwise on a nail is called longitudinal melanonychia. Most commonly in Indian skin tones it is benign — caused by activation of pigment cells in the nail matrix or a benign mole (nevus) within the nail matrix. However, the fact that it has gotten darker over time is a change that needs proper evaluation, because rarely such lines can represent subungual melanoma (a serious but treatable condition if caught early). Key warning signs: the line getting wider or darker, pigment spreading onto the surrounding skin/cuticle (Hutchinson's sign), or only one nail affected. A Dermatologist will examine it with dermoscopy to determine if it is benign or needs a biopsy.
Next Steps
See a Dermatologist promptly for dermoscopy of the nail. Do not delay given that it has darkened. Please consult me directly on Practo.

Hello, Thank you for your query. • Based on the information provided, it is difficult to suggest the most appropriate treatment without a proper assessment, as several skin conditions can appear similar. • Kindly share clear photographs of the affected area in good lighting along with details such as duration of the problem, symptoms, and any treatments used previously. • I would advise against starting any OTC creams or self-medication, as some products may worsen the condition or delay proper treatment. • An accurate diagnosis is the first step towards effective and long-lasting results. You may book a consultation for a detailed evaluation and a personalized treatment plan. I would be happy to guide you further.

HI Dark line on the nail that has been present for 4-5 years is often due to a benign condition called longitudinal melanonychia, especially if it has reminded stable But it should be examined by a dermatologist.
