You have a high opinion on cleanliness. Always carry a sanitizer. Whenever you have a doubt, blow it over that object. You cannot keep on asking questions about infection every time you touch a thing in India. For now, you do not have any risk of HIV.

No, this does not pose a risk of HIV transmission. HIV is not spread by touching currency notes or by indirect contact. No testing or treatment is required for this exposure. If you remain anxious or have further concerns, consult a physician for reassurance.

There is absolutely zero risk of HIV transmission in this scenario — please be completely reassured. HIV cannot survive outside the human body and dies within minutes to seconds when exposed to air, light, or dry surfaces like currency notes. Even if a person with HIV had handled that note, the virus would already be dead by the time you touched it. HIV is transmitted only through specific direct routes: unprotected sexual contact, sharing needles, or mother-to-child during childbirth/breastfeeding. Touching a currency note and then touching your lips — even without washing your hands — carries absolutely no HIV risk whatsoever. The sanitizer you used was entirely unnecessary for this concern, though it is good hygiene in general.
Next Steps
No testing or further action is needed for this incident — your risk is zero. If you find yourself frequently worrying about HIV from everyday activities, it may help to speak with a doctor about managing this health anxiety. Please consult me directly on Practo for a detailed evaluation.
