Started with a common cold cough followed by constipation. Motion is not complete leading to gas and headache. Not feeling hungry. Burping and cough increases in evening. Regularly drinking warm water but no relief. Will it be okay to take an instant laxative ?

It may be because of INFECTION also. Yes u need stool softener depending on type of constipation. Since how many days are u having this CONSTIPATION. How are the stools soft hard or loose ? Any pain in abdomen ? If yes then which part of ABDOMEN ?.discuss in details.
Next Steps
u may need antibiotic or laxative or pre pro biotic accordingly. other factors also need to be evaluated.
