Asking about tetanus shot

2026-07-06 00:46:22
Hello , my son is 23 months old . On Saturday evening he cut his finger with a blade at 3 places . He was given the initial three vaccines of tetanus up to 14 weeks . The booster dose of 16-18 months was missed somehow and it is scheduled to be given on Tuesday morning . Should I wait for it? Or immediately head for a tetanus shot ? Kindly reply

If the wound was cleaned well and it was a clean cut from a household blade, the risk of tetanus is low. Since your child has already received the primary 3-dose tetanus series, there is no need to restart vaccination. However, the missed 16–18 month booster should be given as soon as possible rather than waiting unnecessarily. Please have the wound examined by a doctor as well to decide if any additional wound care is needed.

Greetings Visit ER immediately, injury happened on Saturday, the child is already approaching the critical 48-to-72-hour window where post-exposure prophylaxis is most effective. While his initial three infant doses provide a baseline level of protection, a missed booster means his immunity is not fully up to date for handling a recent, deep, or contaminated wound. A healthcare provider needs to evaluate the cuts immediately to determine if an urgent booster or a tetanus immune globulin shot is necessary.
