Hi... Depending upon the severity of the symptoms, psychiatrist choose to introduce medication. It is not necessary, but useful in certain cases.
The notions about side effects of psychiatric medications apply to people who are otherwise living a health lifestyle, which means no alcohol, no weed, no smoke, no tobacco, no fast food, limited screen time, daily exercise and healthy meals and sleep routine.
A typical adult in these times is anyway doing and consuming things that cause way more harm. So it doesn't matter.
In my practice, I have rarely seen any client reporting dependence on medications. Sometimes client do face some side effects but choosing different medications/dosages consulting the psychiatrist help them reach better results and recovery.
