There are two types of immunotherapy, Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (ScIT) and Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT).
In the older ScIT therapy, patient is given biweekly Subcutaneous injections of the antigen over a period of 3-5 years. Drawback is that it is painful, cumbersome, costly(has to be done by a trained nurse or doctor or immunotherapy technician).
The newer SLIT therapy is in the form of drops instilled under the tongue in daily doses over 3-5 years. It is painless, safe and relatively cheaper as it can be done by the patient alone.
