Addicted to mobile

2025-06-22 03:51:50
My 2.5 years son is not talking as usual of his age. He speaks very few words but understands most of our conversations. He is hyper active and just to make him sit to eat his food we played cartoons and off late he is addicted to mobile, he is interested to watch mostly Dinosaur cartoons or videos and also behaves like Dinosaur in his activities most of the day. Is this normal or something to worry about? Please suggest which doctor we should consult to enable him speak/talk fluently. We are from Hyderabad, please suggest in detail… Thank you.

First of all he is pretty normal but facing the issues due to excessive screen usage. This screen time shall be taper off tactfully and as soon as possible Sometimes excessive screen time induces autism which is delayed speech also. Plz do visit a pediatrician and speech therapist for check ups. Also make his food tempting like making dino shapes in it or other cartoon shapes which he/she likes
Next Steps
Speech therapist consultation

Hello, Thank you for sharing your concerns — I understand how worrying this can be for parents. At 2.5 years, many children do start speaking more fluently, but every child develops at their own pace. The fact that your son understands conversations is a positive sign. However, limited speech, hyperactivity, and strong screen attachment are definitely worth addressing early. Excessive screen time — especially passive content like cartoons — can impact speech development and attention span. Acting like dinosaurs or mimicking behavior from screens is common, but when combined with speech delay, it needs a closer evaluation. I recommend consulting a Developmental Pediatrician or a Pediatric Neurologist who can assess his speech, behavior, and milestones thoroughly. You may also be advised to meet a Speech Therapist for early intervention. Early support can make a big difference, so I suggest booking an evaluation soon. Take care, Dr. Arisha Ayurveda Consultant

Thank you for sharing your concern — and it's completely understandable. Based on what you’ve described, your **2.5-year-old son shows signs of delayed speech**, coupled with **hyperactivity** and **screen addiction (especially to dinosaur content)**. These behaviors are becoming increasingly common due to screen exposure, but some need closer attention — especially when speech and social development are delayed. --- ## 🧠🔍 Is This Normal or Concerning? At **2.5 years**, children typically: * Say **at least 50 words** and start **combining 2–3 word sentences**. * Can **name common objects**, respond to simple instructions. * Begin showing interest in **playing with others** and communicating needs. ### Based on your points: | Observation | What It Suggests | | --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | ✅ Understands conversations | Good receptive language (understanding is intact) | | ❌ Speaks very few words | **Expressive speech delay** | | ❌ Hyperactive & can’t sit to eat | May indicate **sensory or attention regulation issues** | | ❌ Addicted to mobile & dinosaur content | **Screen overexposure can delay speech, imagination, and social skills** | | ✅ Imitates dinosaurs | Shows **imaginative play**, which is good but may be overly fixated | --- ## 🚩 When to Be Concerned? Yes, some concern is **valid** here. While **understanding language is a good sign**, **delayed speech and overdependence on screens** are **red flags** — especially when combined with **hyperactivity**. --- ## 🧑‍⚕️ Which Doctors/Specialists Should You See in Hyderabad? ### 1. **Developmental Pediatrician** 🩺 This is your **first and most important consultation**. They evaluate: * Speech and language development * Social behavior and play * Attention and hyperactivity * Any signs of **Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)** or **ADHD** #### ✅ Recommended in Hyderabad: * **Dr. V. Kavitha** – Developmental Pediatrician, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Banjara Hills / LB Nagar * **Dr. Rajeev Ranjan** – Developmental Pediatrician, Ankura Hospital, Kukatpally / Banjara Hills * **Rainbow Children’s Hospital** has a well-known **Child Development Center** --- ### 2. **Speech and Language Therapist (SLP)** They work on: * Encouraging expressive speech * Improving word formation, vocabulary * Making speech a fun, rewarding activity 👉 Even if the child is not diagnosed with any disorder, **speech therapy helps immensely**. --- ### 3. **Child Psychologist or Occupational Therapist (OT)** If your child is: * Highly hyperactive * Has short attention span * Has difficulty with sensory input (can't sit, runs excessively, etc.) Then a **child OT or psychologist** helps regulate behavior and improve focus. --- ## 📱 Screen Time: A Major Factor **Cartoons (especially fast-paced ones like dinosaur content)** **delay language** because: * Children become passive observers (no interaction) * They repeat what they see but don't form meaningful conversation * They imitate behaviors (like dinosaurs) rather than humans ### 🚫 What to Do: * **Stop all mobile/cartoon use completely** for at least 4 weeks * Expect resistance (tantrums) for 7–10 days * Replace with **storytelling, real-life play, outdoor time, and blocks/toys** * Encourage **nursery rhymes**, books, and **talking to him constantly** --- ## 📝 What You Can Do at Home (Until You See the Doctor) ### 💬 Speech Building Tips: 1. **Speak slowly & clearly** — repeat simple words often: "Ball", "Dog", "Milk", etc. 2. **Avoid asking questions** — instead make statements: ❌ “What’s this?” → ✅ “This is a car. Car goes vroom!” 3. **Use parallel talk**: Describe what he’s doing "You’re eating apple! Yummy apple!" 4. **Sing songs and rhymes** with actions (like “Wheels on the Bus”) ### 🍲 Food Time Tip: * Use **mealtime for talking**, not screens. Try feeding him **while talking or singing**. Be patient — it takes time to transition. --- ## 🧠 Could it Be Autism or ADHD? Not necessarily — but a **developmental pediatrician** will rule it out. The fact that he understands instructions is a good sign. But early evaluation is **crucial** to prevent further delay. --- ## ✅ Summary Action Plan for Hyderabad: | Step | Action | | ---- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | 1️⃣ | Book appointment with a **Developmental Pediatrician** (Dr. Kavitha @ Rainbow or Dr. Rajeev @ Ankura) | | 2️⃣ | Start **speech therapy** — even if mild delay | | 3️⃣ | **Stop all screen time** for at least 4 weeks | | 4️⃣ | Replace with books, play, talking, and singing | | 5️⃣ | Consider evaluation by an **Occupational Therapist** if hyperactivity is strong | --- If you’d like, I can help: * 📍 Find exact hospital contact info in Hyderabad * 🗓️ Help you draft a checklist of questions to ask the doctor * 📚 Recommend toys/books that support speech Would you like me to do that? Consult us for details. Ayurveda offers supportive treatments for delayed speech, hyperactivity, and screen-induced behavioral issues in children. This helps stimulate brain and speech centers. **Consult us for details**: Only under supervision. May be useful later (age 3+) or under clinical setup. 4. Dietary Suggestions (Pathya-Apathya) Food has a major role in speech, brain, and behavior. ✅ Give Ghee, milk with Brahmi, moong dal, rice Fruits like banana, mango, amla Soaked almonds (3–5 daily), raisins ❌ Avoid Artificial colored candies, processed snacks Cold foods, carbonated drinks Junk food, white sugar, excess fried/spicy 🧘‍♂️ Lifestyle Guidance No screen exposure (TV/mobile) — it blocks Vata stability and delays language stimulation More real-world sensory play: Sand, water, blocks, balls, running Encourage rhymes, bhajans, shlokas to stimulate verbal repetition Read books aloud and point to pictures Put child in playgroup with minimal screen and more interaction-based learning Consult us for details.

He is hyperactive, as you mentioned, so encourage him to go outside and play sports. Outdoor activities will help him become more social. It's also important to reduce his screen time, as excessive use could negatively affect his health in the long run.

Excessive screen time is proven to delay speech and social skills.Check for signs like poor eye contact, not responding to name, very limited vocabulary, or repetitive behaviors — these can suggest a speech or developmental delay or signs of an Autism Spectrum Disorder . Hyperactivity and mimicking cartoon characters all the time may also be part of this. Consult developmental pediatrician first
