Usually it should not happen if proper treatment is done and proper retainer is given with good patient compliance. Some cases need permanent fixed retainers too. In such cases if retainer is discontinued then the gaps may open up again. Some gaps may come if the oral hygiene is not maintained properly. So discuss with your dentist everything and follow all the instructions.

If the gap is recurring,it is often due to some underlying cause of movement which has been missed out. It can also occur in cases where the retainer has not be worn correctly. Recently, most orthodontists use the concept of fixed retention to avoid recurrence of gaps.
