Abdominal bloating

2026-08-27 09:12:41
Hello Doctor, I have been experiencing abdominal bloating, especially at night while lying down. I also feel a sensation of tightness/pressure in my abdomen. I often feel like I need to pass gas, but when I try, I am usually unable to release it. Sometimes I stop trying because I am afraid that stool might come out along with the gas. Could this be due to trapped gas, constipation, IBS, or any other digestive problem? Please advise what could be the possible cause and whether I should take any medicine or follow any specific diet/remedy. Thank you.

Your night-time bloating, abdominal tightness and urge to pass gas without being able to release it, with fear of stool leakage, most commonly happens due to constipation with trapped gas, IBS, or uncoordinated pelvic floor muscles where the muscles tighten instead of relaxing, often worsened by gas-producing foods like onion, garlic, beans, cabbage, milk, carbonated drinks, eating fast and lying down soon after dinner; try regular small meals eaten slowly, avoid those gas-forming foods and carbonated drinks for a few days, drink 2-2.5L water, walk 15-20 min after dinner and avoid lying down immediately, try left-side lying or knee-to-chest position to release gas, and keep a fixed toilet time with a footstool without straining, and especially if you have blood in stool, weight loss, fever, severe pain or actual stool leakage consult me on practo.

"What could be the reason?" may be a difficult question to answer. It may be easier to manage this problem. And here too we have to remember that it can be managed by lifestyle modifications and not by popping in a pill or two. And when a disease is managed by lifestyle modifications the treatment is life long. Don't expect "cure" by following the advice for a day or a week. For more details please consult a General Physician.

Hello! This pattern usually happens when trapped gas gets backed up due to mild constipation or incomplete bowel clearing..
Next Steps
1.Drink plenty of warm water throughout the day. 2.Avoid heavy/late dinners, and take a short walk before lying down. 3.Consider a mild stool softener if your bowel movements aren't smooth—clearing the stool usually resolves the trapped gas automatically.
Health Tips
Are your daily stools hard or irregular? If you develop sharp pain, vomiting, or blood in stool..please consult immediately

Symptoms are suggestive of functional bloating, constipation, or IBS, but IBS requires recurrent abdominal pain with altered bowel habits. Difficulty passing flatus should be assessed along with bowel movements and other symptoms.
Next Steps
Maintain good hydration, eat slowly, avoid carbonated drinks and foods that clearly trigger bloating. If constipation is present, psyllium or PEG may be considered.
Health Tips
If there is persistent vomiting, severe/worsening abdominal pain or distension, or inability to pass both stool and gas, seek prompt medical evaluation to exclude obstruction.

“Symptoms are suggestive of functional bloating, constipation or IBS, with difficulty passing flatus possibly due to stool retention. Advise adequate hydration, regular physical activity, high-fibre diet if tolerated, and avoid gas-producing foods/carbonated drinks. If persistent or recurrent, an in-person evaluation is recommended to assess bowel habits and rule out other causes. Seek urgent care if severe pain, persistent vomiting, abdominal distension, blood in stool, or inability to pass stool/gas occurs.”
Next Steps
if pain is severe and not relieved by proton pump inhibitors like pantorozole and anti spasmodic drugs .consult physician and go for USG abdomen
Health Tips
avoid spicy and oily foods .keep hydrated and prefer to eat curd and avoid gas producing foods
