Adenoids are a collection of lymphoid tissue just like tonsils, at the back of our nose. Their function is to protect children from repeated infections entering through the nasal airway. Adenoid Hypertrophy occurs in all children upto 8-10yrs age. Thereafter they regress in size on their own. In some children, the hypertrophy may cause obstruction to the normal airway. In such cases certain nasal sprays and medications can be given to shrink them, so that the child can breathe normally. If the symptoms persist despite taking all medical management then the Adenoids are shaved off surgically to open up the airway but never completely removed. 2.9yrs is a very young age to undergo an Adenoidectomy, as despite the surgery they might re-grow with age and the purpose of the surgery will not be met. The doctor must have done an X-ray or a nasal endoscopy to see the size of the adenoids. Kindly share findings of the same. Only if your child is having severe nasal/ airway obstruction, which is not regressing despite all medical management then you may go ahead with surgery.
Next Steps
After the antibiotic course give your child Nasonex nasal spray 1 puff in each nostril twice a day for 15 days.
Health Tips
Indulge your child in outdoor activities and games
