An infection that affects the throat and tonsils is called strep throat. It is caused by the bacteria Group A Streptococcus. The bacteria reside in the nose and throat region, and affected people can transmit the infection to others while coughing or sneezing. It is common in children and early adults.

The early symptoms of strep throat include fever, runny nose, redness of the throat and tonsils, headache, loss of appetite, body rash, nausea and even vomiting.

Strep throat is not a viral infection, and hence it cannot go away on its own. Antibiotics for 5 to 7 days or even longer can control the spread of infection and complications.

The symptoms of strep throat are usually seen 2-3 days after exposure and may go within 24 hours of initiating treatment. Medications are usually prescribed for 5 to 7 days. If the treatment is not adequately taken, it may lead to rheumatic fever.

Strep throat is caused by Group A Streptococci, also known as Streptococcus pyogenes. The bacteria are known to be highly contagious and may infect the person via droplets through the nose and throat during sneezing; coughing; sharing items; and touching objects, such as doorknobs and wood surfaces.
