Dr. A. B. Gopalamurugan is a Consultant in Interventional Cardiology and is a Structural Interventionalist attached to Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital and Medcare Hospital, Sharjah. He completed his MBBS at Annamalai University, India, and moved to the UK, where he was awarded an MD degree by University of London for his research at St.Thomas’s Hospital, London, funded by the British Heart Foundation. He then trained as a cardiology specialist registrar rotating through North London hospitals and obtained formal accreditation in interventional electrophysiology and device therapy. He has a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), and an International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) Certification from the UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), UK and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP), the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society (BCIS), the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) and the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS), USA.A pioneer in the field of Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Gopalamurugan has over two decades of global experience in cutting-edge heart treatments without requiring an open heart surgery. He is known for his skills in transcatheter valve therapy (changing heart valves without surgery) in India. He has performed 14 of “First-in-India” heart treatments and 4 of “First-in-the-world” heart treatments. In the UK, he worked as a Consultant Cardiologist (Interventional Cardiology and Interventional Electrophysiology) at the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, the Heart Hospital, St Thomas’ Hospital and the Great Ormond Street Hospital. He served as a Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at the HeartTeam India and as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at MIOT International, both in Chennai, India. He was Director - TAVR and Endovascular Therapy and Director - Electrophysiology and Device Therapy.Dr. Gopalamurugan is well known for performing complex high-risk treatments successfully through innovative technology and planning. He has done the maximum number of heart valve treatments in the form of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure in India. His expertise covers electrophysiology study and ablations (Heart Rhythm Disorders), multivessel Angioplasty and laser Angioplasty. He has several publications to his name and is a world leader in his field. He performed the first TAVR with Medtronic Evolut R System, the first TAVI for Aortic Stenosis, the first Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR), and the first Transcatheter Tricuspid Valve Replacement (TTVR) in India. He also performed the first Transacatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) for Aortic Stenosis in South India and holds the Guinness World Record for the first dedicated TAVR Programme, in India. Breaking barriers in heart surgery — he led the way with the first Motorised TAVR in India.He speaks English, Hindi and Tamil.
