Semen analysis is a test that determines the quality and amount of semen along with the sperm count. This test is also called sperm count.

Semen analysis is performed to evaluate the fertility in men who are experiencing difficulty in conceiving. The analysis is also carried out to measure the volume of semen, number of sperms present per millilitre of semen, sperm motility and size and shape of the sperm, also called morphology. This analysis is also performed in Klinefelter's syndrome.

Specific measures, such as avoiding sexual activity or masturbation for two to three days before the test but not be more than 11 days, are required. Avoid using lubrication materials while collecting the sample. Before the analysis, you should avoid consuming alcohol, tobacco and caffeine and any prescribed medication.

The semen is tested in a laboratory to measure the number of sperms and any abnormality in the size and shape. A proper forward movement of the sperm is checked for. This test also helps to check for infection-related problems. It provides an accurate result after analysing the semen sample over a period of time.
