Type 1 diabetes is a type of diabetes characterized by little or no production of insulin by pancreas. It is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, and genetic factors play a major role in this type of diabetes. It is characterized by symptoms such as high blood sugar, increased thirst and frequent urination.

The primary symptoms associated with type 1 diabetes are as follows:
- Increased thirst
- Weight loss
- Fatigue
- Frequent urination
- Vision or mood changes
- Abdominal pain, nausea or glycosuria

During type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system eliminates the islets of Langerhans, which produce insulin. Genetic factors, environmental factors and viruses play a vital role in development of type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is not completely curable. Its treatment is mainly focussed on maintaining the normal blood sugar levels and preventing the complications. The treatment includes administration of insulin and insulin analogues, pancreas transplantation, dietary and lifestyle modifications prescribed by a doctor.
