Spirometry is a pulmonary function test which measures lung function and breathing patterns especially the amount of inhaled and exhaled air.
2. How is a spirometry test performed?
In spirometry a person needs to breathe into an instrument called spirometer through a mouthpiece. The technician will ask you to breathe in and out over a period of time and the amount of air inhaled and exhaled and the rate is recorded.
3. Why is a spirometry test recommended?
Spirometry is recommended to check for lung functioning thus it helps in diagnosing asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, bronchiectasis, etc.
4. Is spirometry test a painful procedure?
No, spirometry is not painful at all. It can only cause mild distress to some people for a few minutes.
5. Do I need special preparation for a spirometry test?
Yes, one should not smoke 24 hours before the test, avoid heavy meal for 2-4 hours before the test. Also, no strenuous exercise 30 minutes before the test.
