1. What are the causes of allergy?
An allergy is your body's response to common substances referred to as allergens. The most common allergens are pollen, dust, food, insect bites and stings, animal dander (tiny skin particles shed by the animals), fungi/molds, latex and some medications. You may be allergic to one or many allergens at a time.
2. How do I identify if I am allergic to a particular substance?
If you have experienced symptoms for the same kind of allergen more than one time, then probably you are allergic to it. However, it is better to get an allergy test done to confirm whether you are allergic to a particular substance.
3. What are the complications associated with an allergic condition?
Allergic conditions may develop moderate complications such as vomiting, diarrhoea and asthma. A life threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis is a serious complication of allergy. It needs immediate treatment as it can lead to death. In an anaphylactic reaction, you may have difficulty breathing, weak pulse, rashes all over the body, dropped blood pressure, wheezing and nausea.
4. What are the treatment methods for allergies?
For seasonal allergies, the flu vaccine is prescribed. The other treatment includes use of antihistaminic eye and nasal drops, oral tablets and syrups to reduce the allergic symptoms. In cases of asthma, steroids may be prescribed. For serious allergic complications, an adrenaline injection is given. Long term exposure to allergens in small amounts may desensitize you against that allergen.
5. What are seasonal allergies?
Seasonal allergies occur commonly every year at the same time of season change, due to exposure to the allergens in the air such as pollen. Seasonal allergies cause running nose, itchy skin, watery and red eyes and sneezing.
