Frequently Asked Questions

What is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a surgical diagnostic procedure in which the organs in the abdomen and pelvic region are examined. A thin long tube with a high-resolution camera and high-intensity light is used. This instrument is called as Laparoscope. The Laparoscope is sent into the abdominal wall with the help of a small incision. As it passes inside the abdomen, it takes images with the help of the camera and sends them to the video monitor. Samples for biopsy can also be obtained during this process.

What are the advantages of Laparoscopy?

With the help of Laparoscopy, there are the following advantages:

  1. To check injuries to any organs in the abdomen after an accident.
  2. To find the cause of pain in the abdomen
  3. To find tumors and growth in the abdomen or pelvic region when X-ray or ultrasound results aren’t clear.
  4. To see if cancer has spread to other regions.
  5. To detect ectopic pregnancy
  6. To diagnose endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, pelvic floor disorders, etc.

What are the indications of Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is indicated to observe the following:

  1. Liver
  2. Gall bladder
  3. Pancreas
  4. Appendix
  5. Spleen
  6. Stomach
  7. The small or large intestine
  8. Pelvic or reproductive organs

What is the preparation for Laparoscopy?

  1. Before undergoing this process, your overall health should be evaluated.
  2. Inform your doctor if you have any past medical history or present medical conditions and the medications that you are using currently. The current medications include anticoagulants, medications that affect blood clotting (aspirin), NSAIDs (ibuprofen), etc should be avoided before surgery.
  3. You may be asked to stop eating and drinking at least 8 to 12 hours before this process.
  4. You may be asked to undergo certain lab tests(blood tests, electrocardiogram,  X-ray, urine tests) before the surgery. This may help your doctor to understand better about your health condition.
  5. General anesthesia given before Laparoscopy may make you drowsy for several hours. Hence, you are recommended to get a family member or an attendee to take you home after this process.

What are the steps involved in Laparoscopy?

The steps involved in Laparoscopy are as follows;

  1. General anesthesia will be given to avoid pain during the surgery. In rare cases, local anesthesia is also given. This will numb the area, but you will be awake during the process.
  2. An incision is made below the navel which may look like a keyhole. Through this incision, a small cannula is inserted.
  3. This cannula will help in inflating your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. This will help your doctor to see the abdominal organs clearly.
  4. A laparoscope is inserted by your surgeon through the incision. A laparoscope is a thin long tube to which a camera is attached at its tip.
  5. The number of incisions made on the abdomen may depend on the type of disease your doctor is looking for. Usually, there may be two to three incisions are made. Each incision may be at least 2 to 3 centimeters in length.
  6. The sample for biopsy can also be collected during this process according to the type of disease your doctor is looking for.
  7. While collecting a biopsy tissue, another surgical tool may also be introduced into your abdomen.
  8. With the help of the laparoscope, the images of the organs inside the abdomen are taken and monitored by your doctor.
  9. After the completion of this process, the surgical instruments and tools are removed carefully. The incisions made are closed using sutures or surgical tapes. Sometimes bandages can also be used for the incisions.

What is postprocedure care/recovery care for Laparoscopy?

  1. After the surgery, you will be feeling very drowsy for the next few hours.
  2. There may be pain and discomfort post the surgery. Your doctor will prescribe some pain killers to reduce your pain.
  3. Follow all the instructions given by your doctor without fail.
  4. Sometimes you may experience soreness around the incisions made on your abdomen or navel.
  5. You need to make follow-up visits to your doctor to remove sutures or to know if the sutures are healed, etc.
