1. What is tanning?
Tanning is a process of getting your skin colour darkened. It is a body's way of protecting against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Melanin is a natural skin pigment that makes the skin appear darker. Melanin is naturally released when the body is exposed to the sun, and it absorbs the UV rays to prevent skin damage. The skin colour darkens, and this results in a tan.
2. Is tanning healthy?
Neither indoor nor outdoor tanning is considered healthy. The exposure of the skin to the harmful UV rays during tanning can result in serious health conditions such as skin cancers, premature ageing, damage to the eye, and weakening of the immune system.
3. What can be done to prevent a tan?
It is better to avoid getting a tan in the first place. The skin can be protected from undesirable tanning with appropriate sun protection. It is essential to always use a sunscreen, sun-protective clothing such as long-sleeved tops, full-length bottom wear and wide-brimmed hats when you are outside.
4. Can we get a tan on cloudy days?
It has been estimated that about 80% of the sun's UV rays can escape through the clouds. Besides, about 17% of the UV rays are reflected by sand and around 80% by snow. Hence, it is necessary to use a sunscreen with a proper sun protection factor (SPF) even if it is not summer as it can increase the time required to get a tan.
5. Can the suntan go away completely?
A suntan will fade away gradually with time. The tan will go away as you shed the skin cells and rejuvenate with new cells. However, it is better to not go out in the sun and to always wear a sunscreen of high SPF to lighten the tan faster.
