1. What is an ovarian cyst?
Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid, growing on the ovaries. Mostly they are functional cysts that develop because of your menstrual cycle during ovulation.Most of the ovarian cysts do not show any symptoms and may disappear without any treatment. The cysts may be present on one or both the ovaries.
2. What symptoms are associated with cysts in the ovaries?
Usually, cysts do not show any symptoms. Following symptoms may appear if, an ovarian cyst is large, or it breaks or blocks the blood supply to ovaries:
·Sudden pain in the pelvis, during sex or while emptying the bowels.
·Heavy and irregular periods
·Fullness of stomach
·Difficulty in passing urine
·Difficulty to get pregnant
3. What are the causes of ovarian cysts?
The causes of ovarian cysts are as follows:
·Sometimes the pieces of tissue from the womb are found on the ovaries or fallopian tubes or outer surface of womb. (endometriosis) It may produce blood filled cysts on ovaries.
·In conditions such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) hormonal imbalance can result in ovarian cysts in some women.
4. Is it possible to conceive if I have an ovarian cyst?
Usually, ovarian cysts disappear within some months without treatment. But, the cysts produced due to endometriosis and PCOS can affect the fertility in women. In such cases, you may have difficulty in conceiving.
5. How will the doctor diagnose a cyst in the ovary?
The diagnosis of the ovarian cysts is done as follows:
·Sonography to determine the size and exact location
·Scans such as MRI and CT
If the cyst increases in size, your doctor may advise a pregnancy, a blood test to screen for ovarian cancer and measure the hormone levels.
