Somatropin

Description

Somatropin is a form of human growth hormone used to treat growth failure in children and adults. It is used to treat growth deficiencies due to various conditions such as Noonan syndrome, short stature at birth with no catch-up growth, and other causes. It may also be used to treat short bowel syndrome and to prevent severe weight loss in patients suffering from AIDS.

Acute critical illness

Prader-Willi Syndrome with associated complications

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome who are severely obese or have a severe respiratory disease due to the increased risk of mortality.

Active malignancy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with an active malignancy due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient’s condition. Any preexisting malignancy should be inactive and its treatment course should be completed for therapy with this medicine to begin.

Diabetic retinopathy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with active proliferative or severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient’s condition.

Closed epiphyses

This medicine is not recommended for growth promotion in children with closed epiphyses.

Allergy

This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a known allergy to somatropin, benzyl alcohol, or any other inactive ingredients present in the formulation.

General warnings

Severe illness

This medicine should be administered with caution in patients with an acute and severe illness. Use of this medicine should be discontinued if the symptoms of the illness worsen.

Relapse of cancer

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients, especially children, who have undergone treatment for cancer. Use of this medicine may cause a relapse and hence regular clinical monitoring is advised.

Diabetes Mellitus

This medicine should be used with caution in patients with diabetes due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient’s condition. Appropriate corrective measures, dose adjustments, and monitoring of blood glucose levels may be necessary while receiving this medicine. An alternative treatment option may be required in some cases based on the clinical condition.

Intracranial hypertension

Use of this medicine may cause increased pressure around the brain, causing visual disturbances, severe headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms regularly after receiving this medicine.

Fluid retention

Use of this medicine may cause fluid retention in adults. Patients may experience muscle and joint pain, tiredness, etc. for transient periods while receiving this medicine. Contact your doctor if these symptoms are persistent.

Hypoadrenalism

Use of this medicine may cause a reduction in adrenal gland secretions and hence, it should be used with caution in patients with a pre-existing condition of hypoadrenalism. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required in some cases based on the clinical condition.

Thyroid hormone levels

Reduced levels of thyroid hormone levels may make somatropin less effective. Hence, it is advised to regularly monitor the thyroid hormone levels of patients during treatment with this medicine.

Pancreatitis

Use of this medicine may rarely cause swelling of the pancreas, resulting in severe and persistent abdominal pain. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe abdominal pain after receiving this medicine.

Missed Dose

Administer the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.
