Description
Septran Paediatric Suspension is an antibiotic composed of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole. It is used for treating various bacterial infections in infants and children above two months of age. It works by preventing the growth of bacteria, thus reducing the infection. Septran Paediatric Suspension can cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, etc. Most of these side effects are temporary and subside on their own. However, consult the doctor if these side effects are persistent or bothering your child. Septran Paediatric Suspension is usually given with food or as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and duration of treatment will depend on the severity of your child's condition. Try to give this medicine at the same time every day to maintain a constant level of medicine in your child's body. Avoid the discontinuation of this medicine without consulting your child's doctor as it may increase the risk of re-infection that would be difficult to treat. Septran Paediatric Suspension is not recommended for use if your child is allergic to it. Inform the doctor if your child is taking any other medications or has any other medical conditions before starting the treatment.

Porphyria

General warnings

Other medicines

Septran Paediatric Suspension may interact with other medicines and cause side effects. Hence, inform the doctor about your child's current medicines including any herbs and supplements before beginning treatment with this medicine.

Liver impairment

Septran Paediatric Suspension should be used with extreme caution if your child has liver problems as this medicine is broken down in the liver. Hence, a damaged liver will increase the risk of toxicity of this medicine. Your child's doctor may adjust the dose or suggest another medicine in such cases.

Drug-resistance

Avoid the use of Septran Paediatric Suspension without sufficient proof or suspicion of a bacterial infection. Irrational dosing might fail in providing the benefits and even cause toxicity. It may also increase the risk of bacteria developing the ability to defeat the antibiotics intended to kill them.

Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea

Septran Paediatric Suspension can cause severe diarrhoea because it may also kill the helpful bacteria in the stomach or intestine. Consult the doctor if your child experiences severe diarrhoea during the treatment with this medicine.

Use in children

Septran Paediatric Suspension is not recommended for use in children younger than two months of age.

Crystalluria

The use of Septran Paediatric Suspension may cause crystalluria (cloudy urine) due to the precipitation of this medicine in the urinary tract (the organs that produce, store, and remove urine from the body). This risk is especially higher if your child has dehydration. Therefore, make sure your child drinks plenty of water while taking this medicine.

Hyperkalaemia

Septran Paediatric Suspension may increase the blood potassium levels in some cases. Hence, the doctor may monitor your child's blood potassium levels closely and/or adjust the dose if required.

Missed Dose

Give the missed dose of Septran Paediatric Suspension as soon as you remember. If it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Never give more than the recommended dose to your child. Consult the doctor in case of an overdose of Septran Paediatric Suspension.
All drugs interact differently for person to person. You should check all the possible interactions with your doctor before starting any medicine.

Disease interactions

Folate deficiency

Folic acid is a vitamin that helps the body to make healthy red blood cells. Septran Paediatric Suspension should be used with extreme caution if your child has a folic acid deficiency as it can further reduce the level of this vitamin in the body. The doctor may suggest blood tests to monitor the blood counts and folic acid levels during treatment with this medicine.

Kidney disease

Septran Paediatric Suspension is filtered by the kidneys. If your child has kidney problems, this medicine will not get filtered properly, therefore increasing the risk of toxicity. Hence it should be used with caution in such cases.

Colitis

Septran Paediatric Suspension should be used with extreme caution if your child has stomach and intestinal problems, particularly colitis (swelling of the inner lining of the large intestine), as it may worsen the condition.
