Oxazepam

Description

Oxazepam is used to relieve the symptoms of anxiety and control the agitation in alcohol withdrawal patients. It should be started at lower doses and gradually increased. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly as it may cause withdrawal symptoms like mood changes, irritability, dizziness, numbness in the hands or feet, and difficulty in falling asleep.

General warnings

Drug dependence

This medicine has the tendency to cause dependency and abuse particularly after prolonged use or excessive dosages. Individuals with a history of alcohol or substance abuse should be treated carefully when they are on Oxazepam. The withdrawal of this medicine should be tapered off gradually.

Driving or Operating machinery

This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities that require high mental alertness like driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms during treatment with this medicine.

Suicidal tendency

Use of benzodiazepines in depression conditions may increase the risk of suicide. Therefore this medicine should be used with caution and prescription size should be limited in patients with depression or suicidal tendencies.

Elderly population

Use with caution in individuals who are 60 years and above due to the increased risk of sedation and muscle weakness.

Withdrawal symptoms

This medicine should not be stopped immediately without informing the doctor due to the risk of withdrawal symptoms like convulsions, behavioral disorder, tremor, and anxiety. Gradual dose reduction should be made based on the outcomes in the patient.

Paradoxical reactions
