Description

Mesalazine is an anti-inflammatory drug used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, a condition characterized by swelling and scarring of the colon and rectum. It is also used to control the symptoms of ulcerative colitis such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.

General warnings

Use in pediatrics

The oral form of this medicine is not recommended for use in children under the age of 5 years. The rectal form of this medicine is not recommended for use in children and adolescents.

Geriatric use

Caution is advised while using this medicine in elderly patients due to the increased risk of severe adverse effects.

Use of NSAIDs

Use of NSAIDs along with this medicine may increase the risk of renal impairment. Replacement with a suitable alternative should be considered under your doctor's supervision. It is advised that you inform the doctor about all your current medicines including any herbs and supplements before beginning treatment with Mesalazine to avoid such interactions.

Active peptic ulcer disease

Caution is advised while using this medicine in patients with active peptic ulcer disease due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient's condition. Replacement with a suitable alternative should be considered under your doctor's supervision.

Missed Dose

The missed dose should be taken as soon as possible. It is advisable to skip the missed dose if it is already the time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose. Symptomatic and supportive therapy is warranted in case of an overdose with delayed-release tablets of Mesalazine. Overdosage with Mesalazine suppository is rare due to limited absorption from the colon.
