Description
Merispas Tablet is a combination of Dicyclomine and Mefenamic acid. It is used to relieve menstrual cramps and pain. It is also used to provide relief from pain due to muscle spasms in your stomach and intestine. Merispas Tablet works by stopping the release of chemicals called prostaglandins responsible for pain and swelling. It also relaxes the muscles of your stomach and intestine providing relief from muscle cramps. Merispas Tablet has some side effects like dizziness, sleepiness, upset stomach, dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea and vomiting. Seek a doctor's consultation if any of these side effects persist or worsen. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to this medicine. Merispas Tablet may cause dizziness, drowsiness or visual disturbances. Use caution while driving vehicles or doing anything that requires concentration. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking this medicine as it can cause excessive drowsiness and increase your risk of stomach problems. Merispas Tablet should be taken with food to avoid stomach irritation. The dose and duration of this medicine will depend on what you are using it for and how well it helps your symptoms. For the ease of remembering, take it at around the same time every day. Do not stop using this medicine until the doctor tells you. Merispas Tablet may interact with other medicines. To ensure it is safe for you, share your entire medical and medication history with your doctor. Maintain caution while using Merispas Tablet if you have kidney and liver problems. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or are breastfeeding before taking this medicine.

Allergy

Avoid taking Merispas Tablet if you are allergic to it. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of serious allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching/swelling (especially of your face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, breathing difficulties, etc.

Gastrointestinal bleeding

Merispas Tablet may cause stomach and intestinal bleeding and ulcers. Therefore it is not recommended for use if you have gastrointestinal bleeding or perforation disorders as it may worsen the condition.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG)

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery is a surgical procedure that increases blood flow to the heart. It is done in people who have major coronary artery disease. Do not use Merispas Tablet for relieving pain after heart surgery.

Asthma

If you have asthma, you may experience allergic reactions while taking Merispas Tablet. Hence it is not recommended for use especially for those who had experienced allergic reactions with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines.

General warnings

Heart surgery

Do not use Merispas Tablet for relieving pain after heart surgery.

Allergic skin reaction

Merispas Tablet may cause skin allergies without any warnings. Signs and symptoms like rashes, hives (painful eruptions that sting), fever, or other allergic symptoms should be reported to your doctor immediately. The treatment should be discontinued if these symptoms appear.

Driving or operating machinery

Merispas Tablet may cause sleepiness, blurred vision or dizziness. Hence it is advised not to drive vehicles and operate heavy machines after taking this medicine.

Use in children

Use of Merispas Tablet is not recommended in children less than 12 years unless directed by a doctor.

Missed Dose

If you missed a Merispas Tablet dose, make sure that you remember to take your next dose on time. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose.

Overdose

Never take more than the prescribed dose. Seek an emergency medical treatment or contact your doctor in case you suspect an overdose of Merispas Tablet.

Fluid retention

Merispas Tablet may cause fluid retention and hence should be used with extreme caution if there is preexisting fluid retention. Your doctor may monitor your blood pressure and heart function closely.

Kidney Disease

Prolonged use of high doses of Merispas Tablet may cause kidney problems, such as painful urination and protein or blood in the urine. Hence this medicine should be used cautiously in people with impaired kidneys. Close monitoring of kidney function is necessary while receiving this medicine.

Liver Disease

If you have a liver problem, you should ask your pharmacist/doctor how Merispas Tablet may affect your liver. Merispas Tablet conversion to its active form may be reduced in people with impaired liver function, which may lead to liver failure. A dosage reduction may be required.

Heart Disease

Long-term use of Merispas Tablet may increase the risk of a heart attack in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or heart failure. It is not used for treating pain after coronary bypass surgery.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Long term use of Merispas Tablet can cause damage to your stomach and intestine. Conditions like bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestinal wall can occur. Any symptom indicating ulceration and bleeding like indigestion, the appearance of coffee coloured dry blood in stools or vomiting of blood should be reported to your doctor immediately.

Diazo test for urinary bile

Therapy with Merispas Tablet may give a false-positive result for this test. It is advised to inform your doctor and lab technician about the consumption of this medicine before the test is performed.
Merispas Tablet should preferably be taken with food. If you get diarrhoea while taking this medicine, stop taking it and consult your doctor. A dry mouth may occur as a side effect. Frequent mouth rinses, good oral hygiene, increased water intake and sugarless candy may help. It may cause dizziness, drowsiness or visual disturbances. Use caution while driving vehicles or doing anything that requires concentration. Avoid consuming alcohol while taking Merispas Tablet as it can cause excessive drowsiness and increase your risk of stomach problems. Avoid giving your medicine to other people even if their condition appears to be the same as yours. Do not break, crush or chew the tablet in your mouth.
