Description

Hydroxyprogesterone is a synthetic form of progestin and has a similar action to the female hormone, progesterone. It is used to treat menstrual disorders in women caused due to lack of hormones. It is also used to lower the risk of miscarriages or premature birth in women.

General warnings

Fluid retention

Use of this medicine is known to cause mild to moderate amounts of fluid retention in the body. Hence, caution is advised while administering in patients with diseases like epilepsy, asthma, migraine, heart and blood vessel disorders, kidney impairment etc.

Depression

Use of this medicine is known to cause a varying amount of depression in different individuals. It should be carefully prescribed in patients having a history of depression. Use of this medicine should be discontinued if the depressive episode becomes more frequent and severe.

Vision abnormalities

Use of this medicine can cause blurring of vision and other effects on the eye like proptosis, diplopia etc. Patients should be carefully examined to confirm if they can safely use this medicine. Any side effects like blurred vision, excessive drying of eyes should be reported to the doctor.

Blood clotting disorders

Use of this medicine can cause the formation of a blood clot in the artery or a deep vein (thromboembolism) resulting in severe to fatal adverse effects. The use of this medicine should be stopped if any such condition is confirmed.

Diabetes

Use of this medicine can affect the blood glucose levels and hence caution is advised while treating diabetic patients.

Initiation of therapy

Appropriate diagnostic tests and physical examinations should be performed to rule out other risk factors for preterm birth and miscarriages. Any hormone related cancer of the breast or uterus should also be ruled out before starting the treatment with this medicine.

Weight gain

Use of this medicine has been associated with increased fat deposit and weight gain in some patients.

Breast cancer

Use of this medicine is not recommended for patients having an active case of breast cancer or are suspected of having it. Report all such instance including occurrence in the past to the doctor so that an informed decision can be taken in regards to the future treatment plan.

Thromboembolism

Depression

Retinal thrombosis

Use of this medicine can sometimes cause a loss of vision by blocking the flow of blood from the retina to the heart. Hence caution should be exercised while using it and any abnormality in vision should be reported to the doctor.

Thyroid function test
