Famciclovir

Description

Famciclovir is an antiviral medicine used in the treatment of shingles, a herpes zoster infection which occurs in patients who have had chicken pox in the past. This infection causes pain, burning, and blisters. This medicine is also used to treat or prevent repeat outbreaks of fever, blisters, and cold sores in people with normal immunity and sores formed around genitals and rectum from time to time. It does not cure herpes infection and may not stop the spread of herpes infection to other people.

Impaired kidney function

Effect on nervous system

Patients who experience drowsiness, sleepiness, or confusion while on treatment with Famciclovir are advised not to perform any activities that require high mental alertness like driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery.

Geriatric use

Famciclovir should be used with caution in the elderly population with kidney injury or liver injury due to an increase in the risk of neurological problems. Dose adjustments are to be made based on the clinical condition.

Hydration

Famciclovir may increase the risk of kidney injury when taken with other medicines that cause kidney damage. An adequate amount of water should be consumed to decrease this risk.

Missed Dose

If a dose of Famciclovir is missed, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost the time for the next dose, continue with the normal dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
