Eplerenone

Description

Eplerenone is used alone or in combination with other medicines to treat high blood pressure. Patients are advised to follow a strict diet and exercise regimen along with this medicine for the best possible effect. It is also used in the treatment of heart failure after a myocardial infarction. This medicine is not recommended for use in patients with a high level of potassium in the blood.

General warnings

Hyperkalemia

This medicine may cause a significant increase in the potassium levels, which may cause severe adverse effects. Appropriate dose adjustments or discontinuation of therapy may be required based on the clinical condition.

Dizziness

This medicine may cause dizziness in some patients. It is advised that you do not perform any activities such as driving a vehicle or operating machinery during treatment with this medicine, at least until the response to initial treatment has been determined.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical treatment or contact the doctor in case of an overdose.

Diabetes Mellitus

Eplerenone is not recommended for use in patients with type 2 diabetes due to the increased risk of hyperkalemia and cardiac arrhythmias. Close monitoring of blood potassium levels is recommended for such patients. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.

Hyperkalemia

Eplerenone is not recommended for use in patients with hyperkalemia due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient's condition. If hyperkalemia occurs during therapy with this medicine, appropriate dose adjustments or discontinuation of therapy may be required based on the clinical condition.

Renal Dysfunction

Eplerenone is not recommended for use in patients with severe renal impairment - CrCl <= 30 ml/min or serum creatinine >=2.0 mg/dl in males or >=1.8 mg/dl in females and creatinine clearance of less than 50 ml/minute - due to the increased risk of severe adverse effects.
