Description

Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is a medication used for managing high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain or discomfort), and irregular heartbeats. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing down heart activity, which reduces blood pressure and improves blood circulation throughout the body. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet may cause some side effects like heartburn, constipation, dizziness and headache. Consult your doctor if these side effects become severe or persist for a long time. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet can be taken with or without food. The dose and duration of the treatment course will be determined by your doctor. Make sure to take this medicine at a fixed time daily to avoid a missed dose. You may need to take this medicine for the rest of your life. Hence, do not discontinue its use even if you feel that your blood pressure is under control. Abrupt discontinuation may lead to side effects or a sudden increase in your blood pressure. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet can interact with other medicines and medical conditions. Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking, particularly those used to treat high blood pressure or heart problems. Pregnant and nursing women should not take Calaptin 240 mg Tablet unless prescribed by your doctor.

What is it prescribed for?

Hypertension

Hypertension is an increase in blood pressure. It occurs due to the narrowing of the blood vessels. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet slows down the activity of your heart and relaxes your blood vessels. These two actions together help in reducing the increased blood pressure.

Angina pectoris

Angina pectoris is a heart condition characterized by pain in the chest radiating to the arms, neck and back. It is caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet widens the blood vessels in your body and improves the blood flow, thus decreasing the chest pain frequency.

Arrhythmias

Arrhythmia is irregular (too fast or too slow) heartbeats. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is used to treat irregular heartbeats.

Allergy

Cardiogenic shock

Cardiogenic shock is a condition in which your heart suddenly stops pumping enough oxygen-rich blood to the brain, kidneys, and other vital organs. Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is not recommended if you have a cardiogenic shock as it may further worsen your condition.

Congestive Heart Failure

Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is not recommended if you have congestive heart failure as it may increase the risk of severe hypotension (low blood pressure) and acute kidney damage.

Pregnancy

Avoid taking Calaptin 240 mg Tablet during pregnancy as it may affect your developing foetus. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

Breast-feeding

It is not known whether Calaptin 240 mg Tablet passes into the breastmilk. This medicine may probably be safe to be used during breastfeeding. However, inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding while taking this medicine.

General warnings

Myasthenia gravis

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder that leads to the weakening of muscles and fatigue (tiredness). Calaptin 240 mg Tablet should be used with caution if you have myasthenia gravis as this medicine can worsen their condition by aggravating their symptoms.

Hypotension

Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is known to decrease blood pressure resulting in hypotension (low blood pressure). Hence frequent monitoring of blood pressure is necessary during the treatment with this medicine.

Driving or operating machines

Calaptin 240 mg Tablet may cause dizziness or weakness. Hence, it is suggested to avoid performing tasks that require high mental alertness such as driving vehicles or operating machines.

Kidney disease

Calaptin 240 mg Tablet is excreted via the kidney and may get accumulated in your body if your kidneys are not functioning properly. This can increase the risk of severe side effects. Hence, this medicine should be used with caution if you have severe kidney problems.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take the dose of Calaptin 240 mg Tablet at a given time, then take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Never take more than the prescribed dose of Calaptin 240 mg Tablet. An overdose of this medication can cause some serious effects on your heart, blood vessels, and nerve conduction. If you suspect that you might have taken an overdose of this medicine, go to the emergency department of your local hospital.
