Description
Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is a combination medicine that consists of Amlodipine and Valsartan. It is used for the treatment of high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels, which makes your blood flow easily, thus lowering your blood pressure. This medicine also reduces your risk of having a heart attack or a stroke by making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet shows common side effects like oedema (swelling in your ankles or feet), headache, sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, change in taste, and upset stomach. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is also known to cause sleepiness and dizziness, so you should not drive or do any activity that requires mental focus after taking this medicine. Avoid consuming alcohol with this medicine as it can worsen dizziness. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet can be taken with or without food. The dose will be decided by your doctor depending on your blood pressure. Do not stop the treatment abruptly as it can worsen your condition. Inform your doctor about all the medicines and supplements that you are taking as those may interact with this medicine and affect your blood pressure. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not used in children under 18 years of age, pregnant and breastfeeding women unless prescribed by a doctor. If you have any pre-existing kidney or liver problems, or other medical conditions, inform your doctor before taking this medicine.

Aliskiren

Aliskiren is a medicine used for treating hypertension. Combined use of aliskiren and Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not recommended as it may increase the risk of serious side effects such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels in the blood which can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. This risk is especially higher in the elderly population and in people with diabetes and kidney problems.

General warnings

Hypotension

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not recommended if you suffer from hypotension (low blood pressure) as it will further decrease your blood pressure. Also if you are taking high dose diuretics (water pills) or are being treated for volume depletion (excess loss of salt and fluid due to severe diarrhoea, vomiting, burns and kidney problems leading to reduced fluid volume) this medicine is not suitable for you.

Hyperkalemia

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet can lead to a condition called hyperkalaemia (high blood potassium) which may result in kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. It is important that you maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment with this medicine. Your doctor will adjust the dose and also frequently monitor your potassium levels.

Use in children

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use in children below 18 years, since the safety and efficacy data is not available.

Primary hyperaldosteronism

Primary aldosteronism occurs when your adrenal glands produce an excess hormone called aldosterone. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use if you have primary hyperaldosteronism, since it may affect the salt and water balance in your body and worsen your condition. Your doctor may either adjust the dose for safe use of this medicine or may suggest another suitable medicine if required.

Renal artery stenosis

Renal artery stenosis is the narrowing of one or more arteries that carry blood to your kidneys. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with caution if you have renal artery stenosis as this medicine will alter the flow of the blood in your blood vessels, leading to improper filtering of the blood. Your doctor will suggest tests to monitor your blood urea and serum creatinine levels. Your doctor may either adjust the dose for safe use of this medicine or may suggest another suitable medicine if required.

Driving and operating machines

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is advised that you do not perform activities that require high mental alertness like driving a vehicle or operating machinery if you experience any of these symptoms during treatment with this medicine.

Liver disease

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with extreme caution if you have liver problems as it can decrease the therapeutic effects of this medicine and can also increase the risk of hepatotoxicity (severe liver damage). Your liver function needs to be monitored closely while you are receiving this medicine. Your doctor might adjust the dose if required.

Aortic stenosis

Aortic stenosis is the narrowing of the valve of the aorta (the major artery that branches off from the heart). Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with extreme caution if you have this condition, as this medicine slows down the blood flow which may increase the risk of very low blood pressure. You will be advised to closely monitor your blood pressure. Your doctor may either adjust the dose for safe use of this medicine or may suggest another suitable medicine if required.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take the dose of Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet at a given time, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double your dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

If you have intentionally or accidentally consumed more than the prescribed amount of Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet, then you might feel headache, confusion, fever, change in the heartbeat, nausea, vomiting etc. Contact your doctor immediately for further guidance.

Angioedema

Angioedema is the rapid swelling of the area beneath the skin because of fluid retention. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet has to be used with caution, as it may cause your body to retain excess water, which could lead to swelling in certain places like the face, extremities, eyes, lips, or tongue.

Kidney diseases

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with caution if you have kidney problems as this medicine may get accumulated in your kidneys and damage them further.

Cardiogenic shock

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use if you have a cardiogenic shock as it may weaken your heart's contractions and reduces the heart rate. which may further depress cardiac output and blood pressure. If this medicine is prescribed in such conditions, close monitoring of your heart function is required. Your doctor may adjust the dose if necessary.

Coronary artery disease

Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with extreme caution if you have coronary artery disease (buildup of plaque in the arteries) as it may weaken your heart's contractions and slow the heart rate. Your doctor will suggest tests to closely monitor your heart function while you are on this medication.

Congestive heart failure

Congestive heart failure occurs when your heart muscle does not pump enough blood. Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet should be used with caution, if you have congestive heart failure, as it will further reduce your heart’s ability to pump blood leading to very low blood pressure and slow heartbeat.
Food interactions
Consumption of grapefruit juice is not recommended during treatment with Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet. Grapefruit juice increases the absorption of this medicine and can lead to an increased risk of severe side effects such as dizziness, headache, swelling of hands and feet, etc.
Taking Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet together with multivitamins containing minerals may decrease the effects of this medicine. Separate the dosing times of these two medicines by at least 2 hours.
It is recommended to avoid a high potassium diet (potatoes, bananas) during treatment with Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet as this medicine can cause high levels of potassium in your blood which could lead to weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, tingling of the extremities, or feelings of heaviness in the legs.

How it works
Amlopres VL (5/80 mg) Tablet is composed of Amlodipine and Valsartan. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and relaxes the heart muscles and the blood vessels by reducing contractions. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker and relaxes the blood vessels and promotes the smooth flow of blood by blocking the hormone (angiotensin) responsible for increasing blood pressure. The combination is thus effective in reducing blood pressure.
