Description
Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is a medicine used in the treatment of high blood pressure. This medicine works by relaxing the blood vessels, which makes the blood flow easily, thus lowering blood pressure. This medicine also reduces the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke by making it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet shows some common side effects like swelling in your ankles or feet, headache, sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, change in taste, and upset stomach. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is also known to cause sleepiness and dizziness, so you should not drive or do any activity that requires mental focus after taking medicine. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet can be taken with or without food. The dose and duration of the treatment will be decided by your doctor depending on your condition. Do not stop the treatment abruptly as it can worsen your condition. Inform your doctor about all the medicines and supplements that you are taking as those can interact with this medicine and affect your blood pressure. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should not be used in children, pregnant and breastfeeding women unless prescribed by your doctor. If you take any medicine that has Aliskiren (a medicine used to reduce high blood pressure) and this medicine simultaneously it may result in serious unwanted effects. If you have any pre-existing kidney, liver, or other medical conditions, inform your doctor about them. Avoid consuming alcohol while using this medicine as it can worsen dizziness.

Allergy

Aliskiren

Aliskiren is a medicine that is used to reduce high blood pressure. Combined use of aliskiren and Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is not recommended as it may increase the risk of serious side effects such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels in the blood which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest (sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness). This risk is especially higher in the elderly population and in people with diabetes and kidney problems.

General warnings

Hypotension

Hypotension is a decrease in your blood pressure. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet will further reduce your blood pressure which can be fatal, especially if you have low levels of sodium in your body or if you have low fluid volumes due to excessive vomiting, diarrhoea, burns, kidney failure, etc.

Hyperkalemia

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet could lead to a condition called hyperkalaemia (high blood potassium) which may result in kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest (sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness). It is important to maintain adequate fluid intake during treatment with this medicine. Your doctor will suggest tests to regularly monitor your potassium levels while you are on this medication.

Use in children

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age, since the safety and efficacy data is unavailable.

Primary hyperaldosteronism

Primary aldosteronism occurs when your adrenal glands produce too much of a hormone called aldosterone. This hormone regulates salt and water levels in the body. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use if you have primary hyperaldosteronism since it may affect the salt and water balance in your body and worsen your condition.

Renal artery stenosis

Renal artery stenosis is the narrowing of one or more arteries that carry blood to your kidneys. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should be used with caution if you have renal artery stenosis as this medicine will alter the flow of the blood to the kidneys, which may lead to improper filtering of the blood. Your blood urea and serum creatinine levels will be closely monitored by your doctor while you are on treatment with this medicine.

Driving and operating machines

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet may cause dizziness or drowsiness. It is advised that you do not perform activities that require high mental alertness like driving vehicles or operating machines if you experience any of these symptoms during treatment with this medicine.

Liver disease

Use Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet with extreme caution if you have liver disease due to the risk of liver damage. Close monitoring of liver function is necessary while using this medicine. Your doctor might adjust the dose if required.

Aortic stenosis

Aortic stenosis is a condition caused by narrowing of the valve in the aorta (the large blood vessel branching off the heart) This restricts the blood flow from your heart to your body. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should be used with extreme caution if you have aortic stenosis, as this medicine slows down the blood flow which may increase the risk of very low blood pressure. It is recommended that you monitor your blood pressure regularly while you take this medicine.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take the dose of Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet at a given time, then take it as soon as you remember. Do not take the dose if it has been more than 6 hours after missing a dose. Make sure that you remember to take your next dose when it is due. Do not take an extra dose to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Overdose of Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet may cause headache, confusion, fever, change in the heartbeat, nausea, vomiting etc. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice these symptoms.

Angioedema

Angioedema is the rapid swelling of the area beneath the skin because of fluid retention. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet has to be used with caution as it may cause your body to retain excess water, which could lead to swelling in certain places like the face, eyes, lips, tongue or legs.

Kidney diseases

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should be used with caution if you have kidney problems., as this medicine may get accumulated in your kidneys and damage them further.

Cardiogenic shock

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is not recommended for use in cardiogenic shock as it may reduce your heart rate, which may further depress cardiac output and blood pressure. If this medicine is prescribed in such conditions, close monitoring of the heart function is required. Your doctor may adjust the dose if necessary.

Coronary artery disease

Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should be used with extreme caution if you have coronary artery diseases (the buildup of plaque in the arteries) as it may decrease your heart rate. Your doctor will suggest tests to closely monitor your heart function while you are on this medication.

Congestive heart failure

Congestive heart failure is a chronic progressive condition that affects the pumping power of your heart muscle. Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet should be used with caution if you have congestive heart failure, as it will further reduce your heart’s ability to pump blood leading to very low blood pressure and slow heartbeat.
Food interactions
Consumption of grapefruit juice is not recommended during treatment with Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet. Grapefruit juice enhances the absorption of this medicine and can lead to an increased risk of severe side effects such as dizziness, headache, swelling of hands and feet, etc.
Using Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet together with multivitamins containing minerals may decrease the effects of this medicine. Maintain a gap of 2 hours between the intake of these medicines.
It is recommended to avoid a high potassium diet during treatment with Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet as this medicine may increase the levels of potassium in your blood. High levels of potassium can cause weakness, irregular heartbeat, confusion, tingling of the extremities, or heaviness in the legs.

How it works
Amlopres VL (5/160 mg) Tablet is composed of amlodipine and valsartan. Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker and relaxes your heart muscles and the blood vessels by preventing contractions. Valsartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker and relaxes the blood vessels and promotes the smooth flow of blood by blocking the hormone responsible for increasing blood pressure. Their combination is thus effective in reducing your blood pressure.
