Atopic dermatitis which is also commonly known as eczema is a condition in which the skin becomes red and itchy. It may occur at any age but is commonly seen in children.

Common symptoms of atopic dermatitis include redness of the skin, itchiness, dry patchy skin, thickened scaly patches on the skin and small bumps on the skin. Symptoms may vary among patients.

Atopic dermatitis occurs mainly due to genetic variations due to which the skin easily gets affected by irritants, allergens and other environmental pollutants. In children, atopic dermatitis may also occur due to food related allergies.

A dermatologist can diagnose eczema based on visual observation of the skin and the patient's family history. A family history of asthma or hay fever is a common risk factor for eczema.

Atopic dermatitis can be treated using medicated skin creams which control itching and repair the skin, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory creams may also be prescribed. For severe and persistent eczema injectable antibodies can be administered. Wet dressing and light therapy are additional treatment options.
